Will Ben Stokes Always Wear a Helmet After His Facial Injury?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
London, Feb 15 (NationPress) England's Test captain Ben Stokes has pledged to always don a helmet during games and even during batting practice following a serious facial injury caused by a cricket ball at the beginning of the month.
Stokes also raised concerns regarding batters who choose not to wear helmets while facing spin bowlers during matches.
"I have never really understood the reasoning behind not wearing a helmet against spin bowling. I used to practice without one during throwdowns," Stokes expressed in a post on X. "After my incident last week and being incredibly fortunate with the outcome, I will never play without a helmet again; cricket balls can cause serious injuries," he added.
The incident occurred when Stokes was accidentally struck in the face by a cricket ball, resulting in injuries to his cheekbone, nose, and eye as he observed a net session for his county team, Durham.
Stokes shared a photo of his injured face from the hospital shortly after the incident, captioning it, "You should see the condition of the cricket ball."
The star all-rounder is set to undergo surgery for a fractured cheekbone as a result of this incident. He announced the successful surgery via an Instagram post on February 5, where he was seen in a hospital bed with significant bruising around his right eye and a small incision on his cheek.
"I may not look it... but the surgery went well," he shared in the post.
Currently, Stokes is not part of England's white-ball squad after the 2023 World Cup and is absent from the T20 team for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, where England has achieved victories in two out of three group stage matches.
He is expected to return to international play in the first Test of England's home series against New Zealand in June but may participate for Durham in the County Championship.
