Cairns, Aug 20 (NationPress) South Africa’s off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been flagged for a questionable bowling action following the first ODI against Australia on Tuesday. In a statement released on Wednesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) indicated that the match officials' report from Cairns raised concerns regarding the legality of Subrayen’s bowling style.
“Subrayen will undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility to clarify the legality of his bowling technique,” the ICC added.
Subrayen debuted in a 50-over international match during the first ODI against Australia at the Cazalys Stadium, where South Africa triumphed by an impressive 98 runs. The 31-year-old bowled ten overs, taking 1 wicket for 46 runs, dismissing Australia’s left-handed opener Travis Head, who was stumped after trying to advance down the pitch.
Earlier this year, Subrayen made his Test debut against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, where he claimed four wickets in the first innings, contributing to South Africa's victory by an innings and 236 runs.
This news is a significant setback for South Africa, who are already missing their fast-bowling leader Kagiso Rabada, ruled out of the three-match series due to inflammation in his right ankle.
South Africa currently leads the three-match ODI series 1-0 after a decisive 98-run win in Cairns, highlighted by veteran left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj’s outstanding performance of 5 wickets for 33 runs, elevating him to the top of the ICC men’s bowling rankings.
The commanding win for the visitors follows Australia’s 2-1 victory in the preceding T20I series. The second ODI will take place at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on August 22, with the final match scheduled for August 24.
In another development, Australia’s leg-spinner Adam Zampa has received a reprimand for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against South Africa.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday that Zampa was found to be in breach of Article 2.3, which pertains to “the use of an audible obscenity during an international match.”
“One demerit point has been added to Zampa’s disciplinary record, marking his first offence in a 24-month period. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” stated the ICC.
