Ranchi, Nov 30 (NationPress) K.L. Rahul, who is captaining India in the ODI series against South Africa following a significant hiatus due to the absence of Shubman Gill, expressed on Sunday his acceptance of batting at the No.6 spot, a position he has been assigned in recent series. He acknowledged the contributions of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Harshit Rana for securing the victory despite the visitors' resilient efforts.
Rahul achieved a score of 60 runs off 56 balls as a middle-order batsman, forming a crucial 78-run partnership with Kohli. The team marked a successful opening to the series, bouncing back from a previous 0-2 defeat in the Test series.
"I’d be untruthful if I claimed there were no butterflies in my stomach. It’s been a while since we played ODI cricket, and expectations are high. However, we kept taking wickets, and the bowlers adhered to their plans. Batting at No. 6 is acceptable; it’s my duty to the team. This role has been given to me for the last 2-3 series and is beneficial for my personal growth," Rahul stated during the post-match presentation on Sunday.
Later, Rahul shared a celebratory picture of the Men in Blue on Instagram, captioning it, "Sunday spent well. Team India wins."
India set a formidable first innings score, led by an impressive century from Kohli (135 off 120 balls) and a significant half-century from Rohit Sharma (57 off 51), enabling India to recover from an early loss and post a formidable total. India faced an early setback when they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal to Nandre Burger, but Rohit and Kohli quickly took charge.
"Watching Rohit and Kohli perform like that is always enjoyable. They’ve made opponents look foolish and exemplify their status. I’ve witnessed this for a long time, and it’s much more enjoyable to have them around in the dressing room," said stand-in captain Rahul after the match.
The seasoned duo of Rohit and Kohli formed a seamless 136-run partnership, alleviating the early pressure. Rohit scored briskly with 57 runs off 51 balls, while K.L. Rahul contributed a pivotal 60 runs, helping India to a total of 349/8.
In defending their substantial score, pacers Harshit Rana (3-65) and Arshdeep Singh (2-54) made early strikes, while Kuldeep Yadav emerged as the most effective bowler with 4-68, helping India fend off a late charge from Marco Jansen (70), Matthew Breetzke (72), and Corbin Bosch (67) to secure a 17-run victory.
"Harshit has performed admirably; we recognized his potential. He’s tall and can bowl fast; though he might concede runs towards the end, he has tremendous promise. Obtaining critical new-ball wickets is what we anticipate. Kuldeep is fulfilling this role, which is crucial for us to take wickets," said Rahul.
