Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) Captain Suryakumar Yadav has extended his support to opener Abhishek Sharma, who is currently facing a challenging phase in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. As India prepares for their first Super 8s match against South Africa, scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium this Sunday, Suryakumar expressed unwavering confidence in Abhishek's potential return to form.
In his pre-match remarks regarding the 2024 T20 World Cup runners-up, Suryakumar conveyed that the coaching staff is not concerned about Abhishek's performance slump. He believes that the top-ranked T20I batsman will find his rhythm as the tournament progresses. “I feel for those who are anxious about Abhishek's form; I worry about them. Why the concern over Abhishek's performance? But I’m more focused on the opposing teams who will face him, especially when he hasn’t yet scored,” Suryakumar stated during the pre-match conference.
“It's about teamwork, and it goes on. Now, the team needs him to play true to his style. He is making the effort. If he succeeds, that’s great; if not, we're here to support him. Last year, he was there for us; now, it's our turn to support him,” he added.
So far, Abhishek has not yet made a mark in the tournament, starting with a golden duck against the United States, followed by quick dismissals against Pakistan and the Netherlands, failing to score in the first two overs on each occasion.
India's bowling coach Morne Morkel also voiced his support for the 25-year-old talent, asserting that there have been no talks about his position in the team. “There has been absolutely no discussion regarding that within our team. Abhishek is a top-tier player. Thankfully, others have stepped up while he hasn’t found his scoring touch,” Morkel said during the pre-match press briefing on Friday.
“As we enter a crucial phase of the World Cup, I’m confident he will deliver, not just for the team but also for the fans, as he brings excitement to the game. He’s striking the ball well in practice; it’s about getting into the groove and building his innings,” he remarked.
Abhishek has participated in eight matches against South Africa, accumulating 200 runs against them, which includes one half-century against the 2024 World Cup runners-up.
