Brisbane, Nov 8 (NationPress) After India's 2-1 series triumph against Australia, left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma attributed his swift ascent in T20 internationals to the steadfast backing and freedom offered by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Abhishek earned the Player of the Series accolade, scoring 163 runs across three innings at an average of 40.75. His performance was marked by explosive starts throughout the series, notably a blistering 37-ball 68 against the challenging bowling of Josh Hazlewood in the second match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“Coming here, I had a strategy knowing there would be extra bounce and pace. But from a team perspective, my approach was to play the same way I've always played,” said Abhishek.
“To dominate the opposition, confidence and skill are vital, and I have always felt supported by my captain and coach. Practicing hard was essential because defeating Australia on their home turf is no small feat.”
“I had a plan to maintain our style of play, which has been consistent since before the Asia Cup. My goal was to contribute positively to the team,” Abhishek added during the post-match press conference.
Discussing his partnership with opening teammate Shubman Gill, he remarked, “It’s pure fire, not fire and ice. We have been playing together since we were 12 years old, which fosters a strong understanding.”
His unbeaten 23 in the final T20I, which ended in a washout due to rain at The Gabba, also made him the second-fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs in men’s T20 internationals since his debut in July 2024.
Accomplishing this milestone in just 28 innings, he fell short of Virat Kohli’s record by one inning. Despite this achievement, Abhishek remains realistic about the challenges ahead as India prepares to defend their title in the upcoming Men's T20 World Cup on home soil early next year.
“As I play more, bowlers will start to figure out my strengths and adjust their strategies. The challenge lies in continually improving. A positive environment, which I have been fortunate to have, is crucial,” he explained.
“As a batter, my focus is on enhancing my game. I think about how to give my team a strong start and develop my skills. Playing aggressively will always have its ups and downs.”
“The captain and coach have reassured me that regardless of my performance, I will be given opportunities. That kind of support is invaluable, and I feel confident that it will continue,” he concluded.
