New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) Suryakumar Yadav, captain of India's victorious 2026 Men's T20 World Cup team, emphasized that their recent success stemmed from a strategic approach of minimal team alterations and a steadfast confidence in a core group of players.

During a panel discussion at the BCCI Awards in New Delhi, Suryakumar explained the philosophy that guided their careful squad management over the past two years. "It wasn't overly challenging. From our last encounter in 2024 under Rahul sir, we understood the importance of demonstrating trust and belief in our players. In sports, there are often phases where things don't go as planned.

“There will be many ups and downs, yet we aimed to maintain unwavering faith in our players. This was our intention as we began our journey towards the 2026 T20 World Cup. Therefore, we made every effort to limit changes until the tournament arrived.

“Entering a major tournament like this, it’s crucial to back those players who have performed exceptionally for us over the previous two years. We knew we had built, as Gauti bhai often states, a 'super team,' so we committed to them," he stated.

According to Suryakumar, this stability was put to the test right from their opening match of the tournament, where they faced a batting collapse against the USA at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, only to be rescued by his impressive innings of 84.

"It’s true that we were favorites entering the tournament. However, playing at home, in front of our own fans, brings its own excitement and pressure.

“There was significant stress. You may have noticed it during our first match against the USA. But with home advantage comes immense pressure," he added.

Suryakumar also praised the batting unit's collective commitment, which consistently led to scores exceeding 200, highlighting Sanju Samson's willingness to prioritize team success over personal achievements.

"We played with eight batters, knowing someone would step up when needed. Over the past year and a half, we focused on maximizing our batting potential.

"All our batters took ownership; they didn’t get caught up in personal milestones at scores like 49 or 90. For instance, Sanju had two scores of 89 and one of 97.

"He could have easily completed a century, but he understood his responsibility to the team and played accordingly. Every batter contributed significantly, which helped us exceed totals of 200 and 250 on several occasions.

When discussing the rapid shifts in momentum in T20 cricket, Suryakumar reflected philosophically. "In our sport, even 10-15 minutes can feel lengthy. What you're describing can change over just a single over. We aimed to play our best cricket, keep it simple, and the boys executed that strategy effectively for me.

Suryakumar expressed satisfaction in keeping head coach Gautam Gambhir in good spirits throughout a demanding tournament. "It wasn’t overly complicated. We gave our all during each match, even if there weren’t many moments for him to relax. But in the end, we were able to see him smile, which was our goal," he said.

Looking ahead, with cricket set to be included in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, Suryakumar revealed his aspirations for adding an Olympic gold medal to their collection of ICC trophies. "It’s exciting that cricket is joining such a significant event.

“Indeed, it would be something special. There are two major events that year—the T20 World Cup and the Olympics—so why not aim for three consecutive T20 wins and the Olympic gold?" he remarked.

Suryakumar concluded by reflecting on how the victory at the 2024 World Cup ignited a wave of success across formats and genders within Indian cricket. "We needed that initial spark, which we achieved in 2024. Following that, the 2025 Champions Trophy victory, the women’s team winning the ODI World Cup in 2025, and now 2026.

“That initial step was crucial. It provided a taste of what it takes to secure an ICC trophy. Now, with this momentum, our goal is to gather as many trophies as we can."
