New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared insights into the personal dialogues that significantly influenced the team's successful journey at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. He emphasized the pivotal roles of faith, trust, and team spirit in their behind-the-scenes efforts.

Suryakumar reflected on heartfelt conversations with teammates, including Ishan and Sanju. He noted that the players' commitment to prioritize the team over personal accolades was a key factor in India's World Cup triumph.

"The narratives of our World Cup squad members have been deeply moving and motivational. For instance, I reached out to Siraj days before the tournament. He was with friends, casually dressed, and when I informed him that Harshit Rana was injured and he needed to join us, he replied, 'Surya bhai, are you joking?'

“I also contacted Ishan Kishan just prior to our selection meeting, asking, 'Chotu, will you help us win the World Cup?' His response was, 'Surya bhaiya, just believe in me.' The way Ishan has delivered on that promise is truly inspiring. Sanju Samson, who initially did not play in the tournament, later approached me saying, 'Tell me how I can contribute to the team.' That kind of attitude is a tremendous asset.

“Each player, from numbers 1 to 15, possesses a unique story. Jasprit Bumrah, for instance, I refer to as a national treasure. He consistently performs at a high level without letting complacency set in. His dedication speaks volumes about his character,” SKY stated during an interview on JioStar.

He also discussed the emotional weight of winning the World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the venue where his international career commenced.

“Winning the T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium feels incredibly special. My international cricket journey began here in 2021, filled with excitement. Returning to this same venue in 2026 as India's leader to win the T20 World Cup is immensely gratifying. It was a memorable achievement for the entire team,” he expressed.

The Indian captain underscored the challenge of keeping non-playing players motivated and focused during the World Cup.

“One of my biggest challenges during this T20 World Cup was ensuring that those not in the playing XI remained engaged and mentally prepared. The players who frequently play are often in autopilot mode, fully aware of their roles. However, it can be challenging for those who may play at any given moment but don’t feature regularly. Thus, I made it a priority to spend time with them and maintain open lines of communication,” he explained.

“The support staff also played a vital role throughout this journey. Though they weren’t on the field, their encouragement was invaluable. Sharing experiences and moments with them meant a lot to me. While I had to make some tough decisions, our common goal was clear: we all aspired to be champions. Only 11 players can compete for the trophy, so it was essential to ensure that everyone felt valued and understood,” he added.

Throughout the tournament, Surya devoted significant time to encourage players facing challenges, particularly Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy, reminding them that setbacks are part of the game.

"I consistently checked in with Abhishek and Varun during the T20 World Cup. I reassured them that excellence isn't guaranteed in every game. After a year of hard work, a short dip in performance can happen, and recognizing that is vital in sports. You often experience more failures than successes. Acknowledging those moments is essential. Just like a bow and arrow, when the arrow is drawn back, it doesn’t signify a setback; it indicates a forthcoming launch to something greater. I told both Abhishek and Varun that they were destined for the big stage. Even if they struggled in several matches, it was fine. If we reached the final, they would shine, and indeed, they did,” he shared.

Looking ahead, the captain stated that India’s recent successes have only intensified the team’s desire for further titles, with major tournaments approaching.

"In 2024, we broke our ICC trophy drought by clinching the T20 World Cup. Following that, we secured the Champions Trophy and now the T20 World Cup here in Ahmedabad. That's three consecutive ICC trophies. We have no intention of looking back. Whatever ICC event comes next, we will maintain our winning approach. The ODI World Cup is set for 2027. As for this T20 team, relaxation is not an option. We have a larger event on the horizon in 2028—the LA Olympics, where cricket will debut. Winning that Olympic gold will be our top priority, alongside the upcoming T20 World Cup. Our goal is to win the trophy for a third consecutive time,” he concluded.
