Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) The former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar praised Suryakumar Yadav for his composed performance, which led India to a significant win against New Zealand in the second T20I held at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Friday.
Gavaskar believes that Suryakumar's resurgence in form has provided a substantial boost to the Men in Blue ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, set to begin on February 7.
India effortlessly chased the 209-run target, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, largely due to a vital 122-run partnership between the captain and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.
Gavaskar emphasized Suryakumar’s awareness and maturity in pacing his innings. “Surya’s innings demonstrated his understanding of the situation. At one point, he was 11 runs off 11 balls while Ishan was scoring rapidly. This indicates the captain’s maturity; he allowed the in-form batter to dominate while he settled in and rotated the strike,” he remarked to JioStar.
“Once Ishan was dismissed, Surya took the lead and began scoring aggressively. His ability to drive through the offside was advantageous, showing he aimed to play straight. Scoring over 80 runs not out was a magnificent innings and a tremendous boost for India ahead of the T20 World Cup,” he added.
The former opener also praised Kishan's return to the national team, noting the strong rapport he shares with Suryakumar, developed during their time together at the Mumbai Indians.
“Ishan and Surya have played together for the Mumbai Indians, so they understand each other's gameplay. Spending more than two months traveling and playing together fosters a strong bond. Ishan is a jovial individual and very well-liked in the dressing room. It’s fantastic to witness the team spirit, which is crucial in challenging circumstances,” observed Gavaskar.
