New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised captain Suryakumar Yadav's ‘mature’ performance, which played a pivotal role in India's significant win over New Zealand during the second T20I at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Friday.
Gavaskar expressed that Suryakumar's resurgence in form is a tremendous advantage for the Men in Blue as they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2026, starting February 7.
India successfully chased a challenging target of 209 runs, taking a 2-0 advantage in the five-match series, largely due to a crucial partnership of 122 runs between the captain and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.
Gavaskar emphasized Suryakumar’s insight and maturity in handling his innings, remarking on his strategic pacing. “Surya’s innings indicated his awareness of the match situation. At one point, he was 11 off 11 balls while Ishan was scoring quickly. This reflects the captain’s maturity; he let the in-form batter lead while he settled in and rotated the strike,” he shared with JioStar.
“Once Ishan was dismissed, Surya seized the initiative and began to accelerate his scoring. His ability to drive through the offside was crucial, indicating he aimed to play straight. An unbeaten score of over eighty was an outstanding performance and a significant boost for India ahead of the T20 World Cup,” he added.
The former opener also lauded Kishan's return to the national squad and highlighted their strong bond developed during their time with the Mumbai Indians.
“Ishan and Surya have shared a history with the Mumbai Indians, so they understand each other’s gameplay well. Spending over two months together fosters camaraderie. Ishan is a jovial personality and very popular among teammates. It’s gratifying to observe such team spirit, especially during challenging moments,” Gavaskar commented.
