Madrid (Spain), Jan 10 (NationPress) La Liga club Sevilla has officially secured the transfer of Switzerland's international winger Ruben Vargas from Bundesliga team Augsburg. The 26-year-old player has cost Sevilla approximately two million euros, and has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Sanchez Pizjuan, where he will wear the No.5 shirt.
Vargas enjoyed a fruitful tenure in Germany, netting 23 goals and providing 19 assists in 161 appearances for Augsburg, following his time at Swiss club FC Luzern, where he scored 10 goals in 38 matches. Since making his international debut in 2019, he has played 50 times for his national team, scoring eight goals. With a father from the Dominican Republic, Vargas is fluent in Spanish, according to reports from Xinhua.
He may make his debut for his new club in a match against Valencia this weekend. Sevilla is currently positioned mid-table in La Liga and is looking to recover after an unexpected exit from the Copa del Rey against second-division Almeria last weekend.
In a statement on the club's official website, Vargas expressed his relief at finally finalizing the deal after numerous rumors surrounding his move.
“I was waiting a lot for this, but I'm very happy. I'm glad to be here. It was very clear. In my first meeting with the coach, I felt positive. I informed my agent that I wanted to come here. I was already familiar with the club's rich history and its many titles. A good friend, Djibril Sow, told me that it was a great place. It was an easy choice. He mentioned the size of the club and the passionate fans. I listened to the anthem and I loved it. Now, I need to learn it. I aim to enhance my Spanish skills, and I'm really happy,” said Vargas.
The Swiss international is drawn to both the club's legacy and the city. “I always saw Sevilla winning Europa League titles. The city is beautiful, and I am eager to learn more about it and the club's history,” he added.
Though he has Dominican roots, Vargas believes his adaptation will be smoother, yet he is committed to improving his language skills.
Ruben Vargas also participated in his first training session with the squad, which held its final practice before facing Valencia CF on Saturday.
