Mumbai, March 10 (NationPress) In light of the ongoing discussions surrounding captain Rohit Sharma's fitness, former Indian cricketer Pravin Amre believes that the Men in Blue require his leadership abilities more than his fitness, especially after Rohit guided the team to their third Champions Trophy victory.

India triumphed over New Zealand by four wickets, securing their second consecutive ICC title. During the 252-run chase, Rohit made a significant contribution with a score of 76 runs, while Shreyas Iyer (48) and K.L. Rahul (34 not out) sealed the victory on a challenging Dubai pitch.

"It was a joyous occasion for all of us. Team India's success in winning an ICC trophy brings happiness to everyone. They played as a cohesive unit and showcased excellent cricket throughout the tournament. Although we won 10 matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup, we fell short of lifting the trophy. The team deserves credit, especially Rohit for providing clarity in roles and leading effectively. He played a pivotal role with a crucial 100-plus opening partnership in the final," Amre conveyed to IANS.

"He also received accolades from the opposing captain for his performance. I have witnessed his journey since his U-16 days, and I am thrilled about his achievements. His leadership qualities stand out as he has secured two ICC trophies and five IPL titles. He is enjoying his cricket and is currently in a great place," he added.

Amre defended Rohit against critics, asserting that India needs his leadership more than his fitness. "They say, 'You can't purchase experience in a supermarket,' and he has demonstrated the depth of his cricketing experience. He possesses the necessary skills and, crucially, is an excellent leader. The team requires his leadership more than his fitness," he stated.

Amre, who coached Iyer in his childhood, expressed satisfaction with Iyer's performance in the tournament, where he finished as India's top run-scorer and the second overall with 241 runs, which included two fifties.

"Shreyas Iyer's role at No.4 was to establish partnerships and dominate spinners. He executed his role effectively, and others also performed well to emerge as champions," he remarked. "Having known Shreyas since his U-12 days, I admire his willingness to take on challenges. He possesses talent, and I hope he continues playing for India. He must focus on his fitness to participate in cricket for the next five years. His game awareness has proven valuable on crucial occasions," Amre added.

The former batter also emphasized the strength of the Indian bowling attack despite the absence of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah. "We have ample winning options. Our bowling department looks promising. Securing victory without Bumrah is a significant achievement," Amre concluded.
