Guwahati, Nov 26 (NationPress) South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma commended his team's united effort following their remarkable 2-0 Test series triumph in India, asserting that their performance will significantly enhance their confidence as a cohesive unit.
On the final day at the Barsapara Cricket Ground, South Africa achieved a stunning 408-run victory in Guwahati, propelled by Simon Harmer’s impressive nine-wicket haul and key contributions from their batters, marking their first series win in India in 25 years.
"This is monumental. Personally, I have been sidelined due to injury for a couple of months. It's not every day you come to India and leave with a 2-0 series victory. What makes it special is that we experienced tough times as a group, and this win is a testament to their resilience. Our mindset has shifted significantly in terms of our ambitions," said Bavuma after the match.
“Our preparation is crucial—players are eager to contribute. On any given day, anyone can step up for the team, and that belief is strong. We are in a positive space right now. The way we performed here will further elevate our confidence,” Bavuma added at the conclusion of the match.
He also acknowledged Harmer for his turnaround after a challenging series in India back in 2015. “That’s vital; players want to know their role. Everyone desires to be the key player for their team. While we may not have individual centuries, we had 4-5 players making significant contributions. I could go on praising my team,” he remarked.
“Simon brings the experience of his previous tour in 2015, complementing Keshav Maharaj well. His clever bowling makes it hard to take the ball away from him. Simon was our standout performer this series.”
Opening batsman Aiden Markram, who set a record with nine catches in a Test match, praised the team's ability to adapt to sub-continental playing conditions. "It's an incredible feeling, great effort from everyone involved. It's challenging to come to India under tough conditions that are unfamiliar to us,” he said.
“As a unit, we must have the belief that we can compete against the best in their own environment, aided by a bit of good fortune along the way. I'm immensely proud of the team. We have effectively adjusted to the conditions. There was considerable discussion about spin and quality seamers with the new ball. Winning here is a significant test of character,” he added.
When asked about his record-breaking nine catches, Markram replied, “I wasn't aware of that, but the credit goes to the bowlers; I merely tried to catch what they delivered. It’s a big achievement, especially with the ball spinning in various ways and both Harmer and Maharaj utilizing the rough effectively. This requires prolonged effort; kudos to them.”
He admitted that opening the batting was challenging but praised the lower-order players for their contributions to South Africa's score. “It was tough, honestly; there was some grass on the pitch against quality seamers like Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. The players who came in afterward demonstrated how to build a substantial score, and we’re proud of them.”
