London, Aug 15 (NationPress) Tottenham Hotspur's head coach Thomas Frank expressed his unwavering support for forward Mathys Tel after the young player faced racial abuse in the wake of their penalty shootout loss against Paris Saint-Germain during the UEFA Super Cup.
At just 20 years old, Tel was among two players who missed crucial penalties, contributing to Tottenham's defeat.
"It’s truly appalling what happened to Mathys. We are committed to providing him with all the support he needs during this challenging time. He is a resilient individual and will have the backing of his family, friends, and our team," said Frank.
“There’s no genuine Tottenham supporter who would behave that way towards him. The real fans will be present at the stadium tomorrow, cheering him on. I anticipate loud cheers for him then,” Frank stated during a pre-match press conference.
The new head coach also mentioned that Destiny Udogie is making strides in his recovery but will not participate in their Premier League opener against Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
Udogie has been out of action since July, when he experienced discomfort in his knee during a warm-up for a pre-season match against Luton Town.
"Every player is available for the team tomorrow. Destiny is on the mend, but it’s premature for him to join the squad," Frank added.
Thomas was later queried about Yves Bissouma, who was omitted from the squad for the PSG game due to disciplinary issues. "Bissouma's situation was addressed, and there were consequences. He will be included in the squad for tomorrow’s match. We’re focused on the upcoming game," he remarked.
Thomas also noted that Manor Solomon has returned from injury and practiced with the team on Thursday. Dominic Solanke made a comeback from injury, playing a role in the second half against PSG. However, long-term injured players James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Radu Dragusin remain unavailable.
