Ahmedabad, April 20 (NationPress) India's T20 World Cup winner Tilak Varma delivered a breathtaking performance, scoring his first IPL century, as Mumbai Indians (MI) set a formidable score of 199/5 in 20 overs against the Gujarat Titans (GT) during Match 30 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday. This was achieved despite early setbacks caused by Kagiso Rabada.

Beginning their innings, the Mumbai Indians adopted a cautious approach with a new opening pair consisting of debutant Danish Malewar and seasoned Quinton de Kock. Struggling to find their rhythm, they could only muster two runs in the first over from Mohammed Siraj.

The pressure escalated in the second over when Kagiso Rabada made his mark early by dismissing Malewar, who managed just two runs in his debut. De Kock attempted to accelerate but fell for 13 runs off 11 balls, with Rabada executing a brilliant caught-and-bowled.

Despite the early challenges, Naman Dhir emerged positively, striking a few aggressive shots, including consecutive boundaries off Siraj. The partnership reached 52 runs before Prasidh Krishna broke through in the 13th over. Dhir aimed for a big hit but was caught in the deep, concluding his innings at 45 runs off 32 balls, which included several well-placed boundaries.

Shifting gears after Dhir's dismissal, Tilak began to pick up the pace, targeting bowlers during the middle and death overs, particularly attacking Prasidh Krishna in a high-scoring over that swung momentum back to MI.

Tilak reached his half-century in just 33 balls and continued to play aggressively. In the closing stages, he displayed his full array of shots, finding gaps effortlessly and sending the ball over the boundary with frequency. His timing and shot selection were exemplary as he took control.

Ultimately, he achieved his maiden IPL century in merely 45 balls, remaining unbeaten on 101. His phenomenal innings included eight fours and seven sixes, propelling the Mumbai Indians to a robust total of 199/5.

For the Gujarat Titans, Rabada stood out with impressive bowling figures of 3/33 across four overs, making crucial early inroads that kept his team competitive. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna each contributed with one wicket, but they struggled to contain Tilak's onslaught in the final overs.
