Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) have retired legendary all-rounder Dwayne Bravo's iconic No.47 jersey, making him the first player in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) history to receive the honour. The retirement was announced at a ceremony ahead of TKR's match against Jamaica Kingsmen on Saturday, recognising Bravo's extraordinary contribution to the franchise, the CPL, and cricket in Trinidad & Tobago.

A Historic Honour

Venky Mysore, CEO of the Knight Riders group, underscored the significance of the occasion. 'Dwayne Bravo's contribution to the Knight Riders and to the CPL is impossible to measure,' Mysore said at the ceremony. 'Retiring No. 47 is our way of ensuring that his legacy will forever be a part of this franchise. There could be no more fitting player to become the first in CPL history to receive this honour.'

Bravo currently serves as head coach at TKR, continuing his deep association with the franchise well beyond his playing days.

Bravo's CPL Legacy by the Numbers

Bravo is the third most capped player in CPL history, having featured in 107 matches for TKR and the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (STKNP) between 2013 and 2024. Only Sunil Narine (139 caps) and Imran Tahir (135 caps) have appeared more often in the tournament.

As a player, Bravo lifted five CPL titles — two as captain of TKR in 2017 and 2018, and a third as skipper of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in 2021. His record of franchise success across multiple teams stands as a benchmark in the league's history.

Tributes from Team-mates

Current TKR captain Nicholas Pooran paid an emotional tribute in a video released by the franchise. 'Thank you for being an inspiration and a role model,' Pooran said. 'We're really happy to have you in our corner. Thank you for being a big brother. Thank you for being a father figure at times for us. But most importantly, thanks for being that inspiration in my life.'

Spin icon Sunil Narine, a long-time team-mate, also spoke warmly of Bravo's influence. 'I think you have paved the way for a lot of young cricketers. The way you care about yourself, your energy levels, and always wanting to win in everything,' Narine said.

All-rounder Kieron Pollard, who has shared dressing rooms with Bravo across multiple franchise leagues, added: 'Thank you for all that you have done, obviously, for me personally as an individual, and then, you know, we're coming together as a force to be reckoned with, something that you always spoke about and being able to win championships and games and create an environment where people will enjoy.'

What It Means for the CPL

The jersey retirement sets a precedent for the CPL, which has grown into one of the premier T20 franchise leagues globally since its inception. Bravo's No.47 now joins a select group of retired numbers across world cricket, a tradition more common in baseball and basketball that is gradually taking root in the sport. Notably, Bravo's transition from marquee player to head coach at the same franchise reflects a continuity of leadership that TKR has built its identity around.

With the 2024 CPL season under way, TKR will look to add to their trophy haul under Bravo's coaching guidance — a fitting next chapter for a number that will no longer grace the field but will remain permanently woven into the franchise's fabric.
