New Delhi, Aug 6 (NationPress) Tommy Fleetwood, a seven-time winner on the DP World Tour and an Olympic Silver Medallist, is set to enhance the excitement at the USD 4 million India Championship. He will compete alongside Rory McIlroy, a career grand slam champion, at the Delhi Golf Club from October 16 to 19.
This marks Fleetwood's much-anticipated return to India for the inaugural DP World India Championship, where he will tee off in Delhi for the first time since 2016.
The English golfer was crowned European Number One after finishing atop the Race to Dubai Rankings in 2017. He made a remarkable Ryder Cup debut in Paris the following year, securing four points out of five to aid his team's victory. Fleetwood has since represented Europe on two additional occasions, clinching the winning point in Rome in 2023 with a 3 & 1 triumph over Rickie Fowler.
Fleetwood is also dedicated to giving back to the sport by founding the Tommy Fleetwood Academy at Formby Hall in England, where he first played golf, as well as at the DP World Golf Performance Centre at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.
The DP World and the DP World Tour have introduced the DP World India Championship this season, co-sanctioned with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). This USD 4 million tournament boasts the largest prize fund ever for a DP World Tour event in India, featuring an exciting lineup that will join Fleetwood and McIlroy in Delhi.
Fleetwood expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “I can’t wait to return to Delhi for the DP World India Championship. It’s an incredible place - the people, the cuisine, and I’m eager to embrace it all. Primarily, I aim to play excellent golf and entertain the Indian fans at this pivotal moment in the season.”
“I am also looking forward to playing at Delhi Golf Club again. I remember it as a tight, strategic golf course that offers a fair challenge, allowing players of all styles to compete, ensuring a thrilling week ahead.”
“DP World are significant supporters of our sport - including the Tommy Fleetwood Academy, which I am deeply passionate about – and it’s remarkable to witness their role in expanding the game in India with this new event.”
The DP World India Championship will be the eighth of nine events in the ‘Back 9’ phase of the 2025 Race to Dubai, leading to the season-ending DP World Tour Play-Offs and culminating in the DP World Tour Championship in November at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.
