New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) While athletes from various countries convened in the Indian capital for the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, navigating travel logistics and meeting administrative requirements emerged as significant challenges for international teams attending the event. Andrey Sukhov, a representative from the Russian Paralympic Committee, emphasized the importance of participating in major international competitions as a crucial achievement for para athletes who dedicate years to their training.

“Primarily, it signifies immense recognition of their efforts and the countless hours of hard work they have put in over the years,” Sukhov remarked to IANS during the event held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Russian delegation is one of the several international teams partaking in this three-day event, which has attracted athletes from eight different nations, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Egypt.

Sukhov further highlighted that Russian para athletes now possess full rights to participate internationally, overcoming previous challenges related to geopolitical issues.

“We faced numerous obstacles and crises concerning doping and the geopolitical climate, but now we are fully integrated. We now enjoy complete rights to compete and participate on the global stage,” he stated.

Although the team experienced no major issues traveling to India, Sukhov pointed out that certain administrative requirements created logistical hurdles for athletes residing far from the Russian capital.

“Fortunately, we encountered minimal challenges in traveling to India, with no visa issues. However, we faced one significant hurdle because the Indian embassy required biometrics from all participants. Those athletes had to travel to Moscow to complete this procedure, which was quite far for them,” he explained.

The World Para Athletics organization acknowledged that broader global circumstances have influenced participation in international events.

In an earlier statement, Paul Fitzgerald mentioned that geopolitical tensions and financial limitations could hinder athletes’ opportunities to travel and compete.

“It's not my place to comment on global politics or conflict zones. It’s unfortunate because many athletes wish to travel and participate here. This situation affects their funding, which is deeply saddening, as we are focused on providing opportunities,” Fitzgerald conveyed to IANS.

Point of View

I find the challenges faced by international athletes in attending competitions like the World Para Athletics Grand Prix concerning. It's essential that we support the participation of these athletes and address the logistical barriers that hinder their ability to compete. The spirit of sportsmanship must prevail over geopolitical complexities.
