Kuala Lumpur, Jan 28 (NationPress) India’s opening batter Trisha Gongadi made history on Tuesday in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup by becoming the first player to achieve a century in this tournament.
The dynamic 19-year-old reached this remarkable milestone during India’s Super Six match against Scotland at Bayuemas Oval. The right-handed opener hit the three-figure mark off just 53 balls, finishing unbeaten with 110 runs from 59 deliveries, which included 13 fours and four sixes at an impressive strike rate of 186.44.
Trisha partnered with G Kamalini to form a substantial opening wicket partnership of 147 runs before Kamalini was dismissed after scoring 51 runs off 42 balls. Subsequently, Trisha collaborated in an unbroken 61-run stand with Sanika Chalka, who contributed 29 not out, guiding India to a total of 208/1 in their allotted 20 overs.
With this record-breaking performance, Trisha has emerged as the tournament's top scorer, amassing 230 runs over five matches. She also played a pivotal role in India’s title-winning run in the inaugural Women’s U19 World Cup, where she scored 116 runs in seven matches.
In the second position for top runs is Davina Sarah T Perrin from England, who has accumulated 131 runs in four matches. If Trisha manages to score at least 68 runs in the subsequent matches for Niki Prasad’s India team, she will surpass Shweta Sehrawat’s record for the most runs in a single edition of the Women’s U19 T20 World Cup.
Sehrawat set this record during the inaugural edition of the tournament held in South Africa in 2023, where she played seven matches and scored a total of 297 runs.
Trisha had a modest start, scoring just 4 runs in India’s first match against West Indies on January 19, but rebounded with an unbeaten 27 in the second Group A match versus Malaysia, where India successfully chased a target of just 32 runs. She followed that performance with 49 runs in the third match against Sri Lanka, and in the first Super Six match, she scored 40 runs, leading India to an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh.
The defending champions, India, remain unbeaten in the tournament and have already secured their place in the semi-finals.
