Muscat, Oct 16 (NationPress) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have successfully secured the final qualification spot for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by achieving a top-three finish in the ongoing Asia/East Asia-Pacific Qualifier in Oman.
Following their victory against Japan on Thursday, the UAE joins Nepal and host nation Oman, completing the lineup of 20 teams for next year’s global tournament set to take place in India and Sri Lanka.
The team, led by Muhammad Waseem, put on a dominant display, eliminating Japan from the qualification race with an impressive eight-wicket win at the Oman Cricket Academy Ground. This decisive victory also dashed the hopes of Qatar and Samoa, who relied on a Japanese victory to remain in contention for the mega event.
UAE’s strong fielding laid the groundwork early on as Japan found themselves in trouble at 25/3 during the powerplay, struggling to recover despite a late effort from wicketkeeper Wataru Miyauchi. In his first match of the tournament, Miyauchi scored an unbeaten 45 off 32 balls, contributing to a 42-run partnership with number eleven Abdul Samad that raised Japan’s total to 116/9.
For the UAE, Haider Ali was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for just 12 runs in three overs. The UAE's chase was aggressive from the start, with Waseem and Alishan Sharafu leading the team to 36 without loss in just three overs.
Although both batsmen fell after quick-fire innings—Waseem scoring 42 off 26 balls and Sharafu 46 off 27 deliveries—the UAE successfully completed their chase in the 13th over, securing their World Cup spot and igniting celebrations in Muscat.
This will mark the UAE's third appearance in a Men’s T20 World Cup. Their last participation was in 2022, where they exited in the group stage in Australia, managing a memorable seven-run victory over Namibia in Geelong.
