Mexico City, Nov 15 (NationPress) - Uruguay's head coach Marcelo Bielsa stated on Friday that the absence of Darwin Nunez and Federico Valverde will not significantly hinder his team during their friendly matches against Mexico and the United States.
The Al-Hilal forward Nunez has been ruled out due to a knee injury, while Real Madrid's Valverde is sidelined with a hamstring strain, according to Xinhua.
“Having both players would have been beneficial, but their absence will not be a setback for us,” Bielsa informed reporters, emphasizing that Uruguay's depth has been a key strength since his tenure began in May 2023.
“We have participated in 18 World Cup qualifiers and seven Copa America matches since my arrival, so the understanding within our squad is already robust,” remarked the 70-year-old Argentine.
Uruguay is set to face Mexico in Torreon on Saturday and the United States in Tampa on Tuesday. These encounters offer Bielsa a valuable chance to evaluate his team ahead of next year’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The Celeste secured their spot in the tournament by finishing fourth in South America’s 10-team qualifying group.
Bielsa mentioned that the majority of his World Cup roster has already been determined but remains open to late additions.
“There are only a few players I have yet to assess, and introducing new talent is always a positive move, especially with the opportunity to compete against two formidable opponents,” he added.
“The aim is to minimize player repetition in both games, capitalizing on the fact that these matches are of a quality comparable to the World Cup. Although I acknowledge that Mexico and the United States have notable absentees, these two matches present a tremendous opportunity.”
