Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the stand-in captain of East Zone in their Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone on Sunday, 30 August, after regular skipper Ishan Kishan walked off the field nursing a blow to his right thumb. The development handed the teenage vice-captain his first captaincy experience in senior first-class cricket.

Kishan sustained the injury while keeping wickets during Central Zone's batting innings on Day 1 of the semifinal in Bengaluru. Kumar Kushagara stepped in behind the stumps as a replacement keeper, while Sooryavanshi assumed the captain's armband on a temporary basis. Reflecting on his bowling spell, Sooryavanshi said: 'Opponent team's wickets weren't falling, so I was asked to bowl two or three overs. Ishan Bhaiya felt like he was taking a risk, but he didn't know that I am a wicket-taker.' He also offered a batter's perspective on crossing disciplines: 'If you ask any batter, they always enjoy bowling. A batter always enjoys bowling and a bowler always enjoys batting equally.'

After winning the toss, East Zone invited the Rajat Patidar-led Central Zone to bat first. The East side kept a firm lid on their opponents through the first session, restricting them to 81 for 3 in 32 overs.
