Madrid (Spain), May 23 (NationPress) Athletic Bilbao has officially revealed that coach Ernesto Valverde has committed to a one-year contract extension, valid until June 2026. This development signifies that the former player will achieve a remarkable decade in the managerial position at the San Mames Stadium, spanning three different terms.
Valverde's new contract follows his successful leadership, guiding Athletic to the Champions League after securing a fourth-place finish in La Liga this season, along with reaching the semifinals of the Europa League. In the previous season, he propelled the club to a fifth-place finish and ended a 40-year drought by winning the Copa del Rey.
The 61-year-old Valverde, who has also managed prestigious clubs such as FC Barcelona, Espanyol, Valencia, Villarreal, and Greek team Olympiacos, returned to Athletic for his third term in 2022. He has consistently expressed his preference to evaluate his contract on an annual basis.
Throughout his career at Athletic, Valverde has overseen a record 451 matches.
"This is a significant challenge. I feel a strong sense of responsibility here, alongside the team and my colleagues. Together, we strive to build a formidable squad, and we will see how far we can advance. Competing is part of Athletic's identity," Valverde stated, as cited on the club's official website.
Looking ahead, Valverde expressed enthusiasm for the club's return to the Champions League. "It's an exhilarating prospect and a challenging competition, which I hope everyone can relish," he added.
Goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Dani Vivian secured a 2-0 victory for Athletic Bilbao over Getafe, confirming their position in next season's Champions League. This win maintains the Basque team in fourth place, three points ahead of Villarreal.
The match became more dynamic after Oihan Sancet entered as a second-half substitute, with Guruzeta scoring from outside the box at the 76-minute mark and Vivian finishing from a corner just before the final whistle.
As a former forward, Valverde boasts an extensive managerial career, including multiple tenures at Athletic Bilbao, with his current stint beginning in 2022. His previous coaching roles include periods at Espanyol (2006–2008), Olympiacos (2008–2009 and 2010–2012), Villarreal (2009–2010), Valencia (2012–2013), and Barcelona (2017–2020).
