Mumbai, May 23 (NationPress) Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar believes that the initial two Tests in the five-match series against England are essential for the touring team, commencing on June 20.

The 69-year-old cricketing legend expressed confidence in the Indian squad for this tour, despite the recent red-ball retirements of experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Vengsarkar, who boasts 11 Test appearances and a remarkable 6,868 runs, is optimistic about the performance of emerging talents during this challenging tour.

"We possess a strong and capable team. India has a significant opportunity, and the first two Tests are critical - they will largely influence the team’s performance for the subsequent matches in the five-Test series. I anticipate that new players may shine during this series, and I have faith in India’s potential for success," Vengsarkar shared in an exclusive interview with IANS.

The seasoned batsman praised IPL 2025 breakout talents Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, along with Mumbai wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu, for their selection in the India U19 squad for the England tour.

Mhatre is set to lead the squad during the tour, which includes a 50-over warm-up match, followed by a five-match Youth One-Day series and two Multi-Day matches against England U19 from June 24 to July 23. Kundu will serve as Mhatre’s deputy.

"It’s fantastic that Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Abhigyan Kundu have been included in the India U19 squad for the England tour. I’ve observed Kundu, a Mumbai native; he is an excellent player, a skilled keeper, and a smart thinker. I have high expectations for his performance on this tour. They have a chance to prove their worth," Vengsarkar stated.

"The exposure provided by the IPL is immense, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for them to accumulate runs and secure victories for their teams," he added.

When asked about potential winners of IPL 2025, Vengsarkar expressed support for Royal Challengers Bengaluru or Punjab Kings to claim their first title.

"Both RCB and Punjab have been striving for the title for numerous years. I hope that one of these teams achieves victory in IPL this time - it would be an incredible accomplishment for the team, franchise, and owners," Vengsarkar concluded.
