Washington, July 21 (NationPress) As the world eagerly anticipates the return of tennis legend Venus Williams, the 45-year-old is confident that she remains the same player and is ready to perform well at the Washington Open after a 16-month hiatus.

Williams is set to face fellow American Peyton Stearns in her opening match. This marks her second appearance at the D.C. event, having faced a first-round exit in 2022.

"I truly believe I'll play well. I’m still the same player. I’m a powerful hitter. I strike hard. That’s my style. It’s all about making those big shots count. So, my focus will be on executing on the court. That’s my primary objective," said Williams during a press conference.

Additionally, she will compete in the women's doubles alongside her partner Hailey Baptiste. Williams’ last competition was in Miami in March 2024.

A seven-time Grand Slam champion, with two US Open titles and five Wimbledon victories, Williams shared how her trip to England for Wimbledon in June rekindled her excitement for a comeback.

"Visiting Wimbledon this year, even for just a day, was incredible and exhilarating. It brought back memories of my past experiences, and of course, that rush of adrenaline. I think about the joy of playing, the thrill of facing challenges—whether it’s the opponents, the conditions, or sometimes overcoming personal barriers. Those moments are truly thrilling," she remarked.

This year, 28 women are competing for the Washington title, including five Grand Slam singles champions. "I recall my first time coming here at about 13 years old—so I definitely have a special connection with D.C. It feels amazing to return and play tennis. I believe it’s a delightful surprise for the fans and the tennis community overall," she added.

"Over the past year, I’ve faced numerous physical challenges. So, to return and be able to compete while hopefully enjoying myself is an incredible opportunity. I am extremely thankful to the tournament for the wild card," concluded Williams.
