New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) Sharing the batting crease with Virat Kohli during a run chase transforms pressure into clarity, a perspective articulated by Devdutt Padikkal following the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s impressive victory in their IPL 2026 opener.

For Padikkal, having Kohli at the other end significantly impacts the dynamics of a chase, allowing him to play more freely while ensuring the pace of the innings is kept in check.

In a format where pursuing totals exceeding 200 runs often requires both boldness and composure, Padikkal’s dynamic 61 off just 26 deliveries was superbly complemented by Kohli’s unbeaten 69, leading RCB to a comfortable victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad. The left-handed batsman noted Kohli’s exceptional game awareness in such scenarios, which simplifies decision-making and helps partners find their rhythm during the chase.

"It feels amazing to be back here. We missed playing at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The fans were incredible, and having their support makes it fantastic to kick off with a win," Padikkal remarked in a video shared by IPL.

While RCB’s batting took the spotlight, Padikkal was quick to recognize the significant contribution of debutant Jacob Duffy, whose impressive figures of 3-22 played a crucial role in curbing SRH’s strong total.

"It's challenging for anyone to come in for their first match and make a mark, especially in a venue like Chinnaswamy, where runs can come quickly and pressure can mount fast," he added.

Padikkal emphasized the need for early breakthroughs against SRH's formidable top order, praising Duffy’s discipline and bravery under pressure, stating, "For someone like him, the way he stepped up and the courage he displayed, especially against their top three, was vital. It was crucial to secure a few wickets early, and he executed that effectively for us."

Padikkal’s innings was characterized by fearless stroke play, but he credited his success to maintaining clarity in his preparations and adhering to a consistent approach rather than chasing fleeting moments.

"I've been in good form. When you carry confidence and runs into a match, it certainly makes things a bit easier. However, every game is unique, and you must stick to your processes and the strategies that have served you well over the years, which is precisely what I aim to do," he explained.

If Padikkal ignited the innings, it was Kohli’s unbeaten 69 that provided stability to the chase, a presence that the young opener believes simplifies the task at the other end.

"Particularly during chases, batting next to Virat makes your role significantly more manageable because he understands the tempo required to chase down totals. Having that assurance from one end makes your own game much easier as you clearly know the required pace. It has been fantastic to have him with me through these chases over the past couple of years," Padikkal concluded.
