Visakhapatnam, Dec 22 (NationPress) India’s emerging spin talent Vaishnavi Sharma is eager to capitalize on her initial success in international cricket and secure her position in the team’s plans for white-ball formats.
The 20-year-old made her senior debut for India against Sri Lanka in Vizag on Sunday, showcasing a solid performance in the series opener. Vaishnavi bowled a tight four-over spell, achieving figures of 0/16 with an economy rate of 4, contributing to India's convincing eight-wicket victory while maintaining pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen.
Despite not taking a wicket, the young player impressed with her precision and control, allowing no boundaries against a formidable Sri Lankan batting order. She exhibited remarkable composure on her debut at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, fitting seamlessly into the team.
In her post-match interview, she admitted to feeling anxious prior to the game but shared that those nerves dissipated once the match commenced.
“I felt nervous before the national anthem. But after that, I settled down. I’m thrilled to have executed my plan. We have four more matches left in the series,” Vaishnavi expressed.
Vaishnavi received her first international cap following an outstanding performance at the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, where she finished as the top wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an impressive average of 4.35.
With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup approaching in less than six months, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has indicated that this series will provide opportunities for emerging players. Vaishnavi is determined to seize this opportunity and transform her long-standing aspirations into reality.
“We have put in a lot of effort for this. Our dream is to represent India and make a meaningful contribution. I can’t predict the future. We’ll leave that to God,” she concluded.
