London, May 30 (NationPress) West Ham United has officially announced that the Club has faced penalties from The Football Association (FA) due to the behavior of its supporters during a Premier League away match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on February 3, relating to homophobic chanting by a significant number of fans.
An independent Regulatory Commission has enforced a plan of action, which includes a £120,000 fine and a caution regarding future conduct, after the Club acknowledged the misconduct charge linked to abusive, offensive, discriminatory, and homophobic chants from its supporters.
“The homophobic chanting, which constituted a criminal offense in this instance, is contrary to the values and beliefs held by West Ham United and the vast majority of the Club’s fanbase. The Club maintains a zero-tolerance policy against discriminatory, abusive, and insulting behavior, and those identified will face Club bans in addition to any criminal charges,” stated the Club.
“West Ham United strongly condemns all forms of offensive and discriminatory behavior and is dedicated to collaborating with The FA and relevant stakeholders to eliminate such actions, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all supporters,” the club's statement read.
The Club confirmed it is actively implementing measures to review and bolster existing initiatives aimed at proactively preventing and detecting any potential discriminatory or inappropriate conduct in future home and away matches.
“It was alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone claiming to be supporters) refrained from behaving in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting manner with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation.
“West Ham United FC subsequently admitted the charge. The Regulatory Commission imposed the club's sanctions following a hearing, and the written rationale for these sanctions can be reviewed below,” according to the FA's statement.
