Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 12 (NationPress) The ticket sales for the forthcoming ICC Women’s World Cup in England have already exceeded the total sales from the 50-over tournament in 2017, highlighting the increasing popularity of women's cricket.
England is set to host the 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in June and July. With five months still remaining until the opening match on June 12, over 100,000 tickets have already been sold, according to the BBC.
The 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup final at Lord’s, which England won on home turf, was a landmark event, marking the first time a traditionally male-dominated sport sold out England’s largest cricket stadium for a women's match.
The upcoming T20 tournament will be the largest ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to date, featuring 12 teams competing for the prestigious trophy.
These 12 teams are split into two groups. Group 1 consists of multiple-time champions Australia, 2024 finalists South Africa, and strong teams from Asia, India and Pakistan, alongside two teams from the Global Qualifier.
Group 2 comprises the hosts England, defending champions New Zealand, Sri Lanka, former winners West Indies, and the remaining two teams from the Global Qualifier.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, which are set for June 30 and July 2 at The Oval, culminating in the grand finale at Lord’s on July 5.
Spanning 24 days, the tournament will feature 33 matches across seven renowned venues: Edgbaston, Hampshire Bowl, Headingley, Old Trafford, The Oval, Bristol County Ground, and Lord’s.
The Global Qualifier will kick off in Kathmandu, Nepal, from January 18 to February 1, with 10 teams competing for the four remaining spots in the tournament being held in England and Wales.
New Zealand are the current T20 World Cup champions, having claimed the title in 2024 by defeating South Africa in the final.
