New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) Veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine of the Gujarat Giants (GG) expressed her excitement about the opportunity to play in front of home supporters as they gear up to face the currently unbeaten Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Vadodara-leg of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Monday evening.
After a recent setback, losing to RCB by 32 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, GG is eager to turn things around. “It’s incredibly thrilling to be back home. We are looking forward to performing in front of our fans. Facing RCB, who are in great form with four consecutive wins, is truly exciting as they are showcasing some impressive cricket,” Devine noted in a video shared on WPL’s social media.
“For us, the focus is on simplicity. We believe that when we play our best cricket, we can overcome any team in this league. We are genuinely thrilled to play in front of our home crowd and aim for a couple of victories,” she added.
RCB, captained by Smriti Mandhana, has established themselves as the team to beat in this five-team tournament, remaining unbeaten with eight points from four matches. Meanwhile, GG, under the leadership of Ashleigh Gardner, holds the third spot with four points from the same number of games.
The BCA Stadium in Vadodara has hosted six WPL matches to date, all of which occurred in 2025, with teams batting second winning each of those games. Following the GG-RCB showdown, the Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will face the Delhi Capitals, managed by Jemimah Rodrigues, on Tuesday evening.
In their earlier encounter, RCB maintained their flawless start to the 2026 WPL season with a 32-run triumph over the Gujarat Giants, highlighted by an impressive five-wicket haul from off-spinner Shreyanka Patil.
Despite a rocky start with four wickets lost during the Power-play, RCB found stability as Radha Yadav scored 66 runs off 42 balls, marking her first WPL fifty. She partnered with Richa Ghosh, who contributed 44 runs off 28 balls, while Nadine de Klerk added a late 26 runs, leading RCB to a total of 182/7.
