Yograj Singh's Advice for Virat Kohli: Avoid This Shot
Chandigarh, Jan 5 (NationPress) In the wake of India's 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat to Australia, former cricketer Yograj Singh shared insights on the struggles faced by Indian senior batter Virat Kohli, emphasizing that someone should have advised him against playing a specific shot.

Chandigarh, Jan 5 (NationPress) Following India's 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat to Australia, ex-cricketer Yograj Singh expressed his views on the Indian senior batter's poor performance in the series. He pointed out that Virat Kohli faced dismissals in a similar manner throughout the series, insisting that someone should have cautioned the star batter against executing that shot.

Over the span of five Tests, Kohli could only accumulate 190 runs and was dismissed eight times while attempting to chase balls outside the off-stump. In contrast, Rohit Sharma, who missed the Perth Test due to the birth of his second child, managed only 31 runs in three Tests before opting to take a break for the fifth Test in Sydney.

Singh remarked that when a player is donning the Indian jersey, they might not necessarily need conventional coaching but rather require effective man-management to enhance their performance.

"The significance of a coach comes into question when playing for India. As an exceptional player representing the nation, traditional coaching may not be required. What is truly needed is someone to provide man-management. At times, a player’s mentality can become blocked; they might struggle to score runs or keep getting out. Regardless of how talented a player is, they cannot overshadow the game itself," Singh informed IANS.

"Such players need guidance, someone to say, 'Let’s hit the nets and work on this'. For instance, Virat Kohli was dismissed multiple times while attempting his favorite shot—the right-hand push. This shot is effective on Indian pitches, in England, and elsewhere. However, on pitches where the ball bounces and carries more, someone should have advised him, 'Virat, don’t play this shot'. Just play straight or leave this ball.

"This highlights the distinction between coaching and management. Coaching involves identifying and addressing a player's technical flaws. Someone must recognize and communicate these issues to the players. But who will inform Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli? Even they need someone to point out what’s amiss," he added.

"I believe what’s essential is proper management—someone who understands when a player’s mindset is blocked, when they’re feeling down, and reassures them, saying, 'Don’t worry, we’re here for you. You’ll succeed because you’re a great player.' Every player experiences a downturn, even the best. It’s part of the game," he continued.

Discussing head coach Gautam Gambhir's coaching approach, Singh stated, "Gambhir is an exceptional cricketer with a sharp mind. He possesses the capability to steer the team forward. However, when mistakes are made, he highlights them—and rightly so. But to maintain cohesion among younger players, effective management is crucial."

"Someone needs to reassure them, 'Virat, it’s nothing serious; it happens to everyone.' 'Rohit, don’t worry; these phases are temporary.' 'Bumrah, you’re performing well; just remain focused.' The younger players, particularly fast bowlers like Siraj, require guidance and support. Someone should stand by them, illustrate the way, and help them grasp the intricacies of the game," he further explained.

"When players are down and struggling, management serves as that magic wand that elevates them," Singh concluded.

After suffering a six-wicket defeat in the Sydney Test, India has missed out on a chance to compete in the 2025 World Test Championship final, as Australia is set to face South Africa in the championship match at Lord's, vying for their second consecutive title.
