New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) The Pakistani opener Imam-ul-Haq has officially joined Yorkshire as an overseas player for the rest of the English domestic season. At just 28 years old, Imam boasts an impressive record with three Test centuries and nine ODI centuries. He is set to make his debut in Yorkshire’s upcoming County Championship match against Surrey at Scarborough.
Imam steps in for Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad, who had to withdraw from his scheduled stint due to personal circumstances.
Familiar with English conditions from his previous stint with Somerset in 2022, Imam's recent performance helped Pakistan Television claim the President’s Cup, which is the premier domestic tournament in Pakistan. Yorkshire is optimistic that his experience and current form will significantly enhance their performance in both red-ball and 50-over formats as the season progresses.
“We are thrilled to have Imam with us and that he will be available right away,” noted Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s general manager of cricket. “While we were disappointed that Ruturaj couldn’t join us, we are gaining an exceptional player with proven international credentials.”
“Imam has a commendable track record and is already accustomed to domestic cricket here, which will be advantageous during this crucial period. We appreciate the promptness of his arrival and everyone at the club is eager to work with him until the season wraps up,” he added.
On another note, Derbyshire has announced the return of Australian batter Caleb Jewell to the club in 2026 after finalizing a new contract. Jewell has been a top performer in Division Two this season, amassing 821 runs at an average of 54.73, including a remarkable career-best score of 232 against Kent.
“Caleb has been outstanding in the first half of the season, even while adjusting to new conditions, and we were eager to secure a deal swiftly,” stated Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire’s head of cricket. “He brings a level of determination that is exactly what we seek from an overseas player.”
Jewell expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’ve truly enjoyed my time at Derbyshire, and I’m thrilled to have signed for the next season already. The team is fantastic; they’ve made me feel incredibly welcome, which has positively impacted our performance on the field. We aim for a strong showing in the 50-over competition and will focus on our promotion aspirations.”
