Mumbai, July 23 (NationPress) In a historic achievement for Indian sailing, Zahaan Hemrajani from Mumbai has clinched a top-10 overall position in the esteemed U17 O’pen Skiff World Championships, which concluded in Nishinomiya, Japan, on Wednesday. This remarkable result stands as one of the finest finishes by an Indian sailor in this international youth competition.
The event was organized by the International O’pen Skiff Association, recognized as a youth class by World Sailing — the sport's global governing body — and took place from July 17 to 23.
Zahaan's journey has been truly inspiring. After experiencing equipment failures that sidelined him for the initial six races, the young sailor made a stunning comeback. Showcasing remarkable resilience and racing prowess, he secured victories in two races and placed in the top 10 in nearly half of his heats — a milestone previously unseen by an Indian sailor in this category.
“This means everything to me,” Zahaan expressed after the event. “I owe immense gratitude to my coach, Umesh Naiksatam, and the entire 24Seven Sailing Team for their relentless support, as well as to my mentor Amish Ved for his unwavering belief and guidance.”
He also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to his parents, Nilima and Ashish Hemrajani (founder of BookMyShow), for their steadfast support. Zahaan further acknowledged Captain Abhimanyu Patankar of the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC) and the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) for their crucial contributions to his sailing development.
Additionally, he thanked the Government of Maharashtra, whose timely assistance granted him access to Pawna Lake during the monsoon season — a vital factor that facilitated uninterrupted training during the off-season.
Zahaan’s outstanding performance not only highlights India's rising sailing talent but also sets a significant precedent for the country's future in the realm of international junior sailing.
