New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) As part of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)-Har Ghar Jal initiative, which was launched in 2019, it has been reported that all rural households in more than 2.72 lakh villages now have tap water supply as of Tuesday, according to the Centre's update to the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The Minister of State (MoS) for Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, provided this information in a written reply, explaining that the JJM's goal is to ensure that every rural household receives potable water through tap connections, providing a minimum service level of 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd), meeting the specified quality standards (BIS:10500), consistently and sustainably.

At the time of the JJM's announcement in August 2019, it was noted that only 3.23 crore (17%) rural households had tap water connections.

According to reports from states and Union Territories (UTs) as of February 10, approximately 12.56 crore additional rural households have been granted tap water connections, said the MoS.

As of February 10, out of a total of 19.36 crore rural households in India, around 15.69 crore (81.02%) households in approximately 5.82 lakh villages now have access to tap water in their homes, MoS Somanna added.

The total funding allocated for the JJM initiative by both the Centre and state governments, including UTs, from 2019-2020 up until January 28, 2026, amounts to Rs 4.19 lakh crore.

Furthermore, the MoS highlighted that efficient planning and execution of the JJM involves collaborative discussions and the finalization of saturation plans as well as annual action plans for states and UTs. Regular implementation reviews, training sessions, and field visits by multidisciplinary teams are all part of the strategy to offer technical support.

For effective online monitoring, the JJM–Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) and the JJM–Dashboard have been established, along with a transparent online financial management system through the Public Financial Management System.

Additionally, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has stated that the Central government provides both financial and technical assistance to states via various schemes and missions, including the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and AMRUT 2.0.

Under AMRUT 2.0, 3,528 water supply projects valued at Rs 1.19 lakh crore have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which encompass a treatment capacity of 11,393 MLD and approximately 1.26 lakh km of water supply network.
