Kolkata, March 23 (NationPress) In preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections, West Bengal is set to receive additional central forces. An official from the Election Commission revealed on Monday that a total of 2,400 companies of central forces will be assigned to oversee the elections in Bengal this year.

Significantly, 480 companies of these forces were already deployed in the state at the start of this month.

Reports suggest that another 300 companies of central forces are expected to arrive by March 31, with the remainder to follow in a phased approach.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has convened a meeting to strategize the deployment of this substantial force.

There is also indication of another meeting occurring later today, to be chaired by Deputy Commissioner Manish Garg. This meeting will take place virtually.

Besides Deputy Commissioner Garg, other officials, including State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal, will participate in the session.

Subsequently, the Election Commission will hold an additional meeting with District Electoral Officers (who also function as District Magistrates) and Superintendents of Police to discuss election security and preparations.

The voting in Bengal is slated for two phases on April 23 and April 29. The Election Commission has implemented numerous measures to ensure that both voting phases are free of violence.

This time, the operational authority of the Central Forces will extend beyond polling stations; they are permitted to intervene in any disturbances occurring in the vicinity of polling areas.

Moreover, if credible claims arise concerning threats or intimidation towards voters outside polling stations, a re-election may be mandated.

The Commission has firmly stated that acts such as vote tampering, civil unrest, or the forcible capture of polling booths will be dealt with strictly.
