Govt Announces 5 Kg LPG Cylinders Available Without Address Proof Amid Supply Concerns
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) In light of the changing dynamics in West Asia, the government announced on Saturday that 5 kg LPG cylinders can be obtained from distributors by simply presenting a valid ID, eliminating the need for address verification.
The government is implementing extensive measures to guarantee uninterrupted access to fuel and energy supplies, even amidst rising tensions in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which pose threats to global energy distribution.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, “The 5 Kg FTL cylinders are accessible at local LPG distributors and can be acquired by showing any valid ID. There is no requirement for address proof.”
This initiative is designed to enhance access to cooking fuel, particularly for migrant workers and individuals without local address documentation.
Since March 23, approximately 570,000 of these cylinders have been sold, with more than 71,000 units sold in a single day recently.
The Ministry reassured the public that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG in the country, urging citizens not to engage in panic buying.
All retail fuel stations are functioning normally with sufficient supplies available across the nation, despite reports of overwhelming crowds at certain petrol pumps due to unfounded rumors.
To ensure stable supply, the government has ramped up domestic LPG production, ensured refineries operate at peak capacity, and prioritized fuel distribution to households, hospitals, and essential services.
Additionally, several demand-side initiatives have been introduced, including extending the LPG booking cycle and advocating for alternative fuel sources such as PNG, kerosene, and electric cooking options.
“States have been encouraged to support new PNG connections for both residential and commercial users,” the ministry elaborated.
The government has amplified monitoring efforts to prevent hoarding and black marketing. Recently, over 3,700 raids were conducted, leading to strict actions against non-compliant LPG distributors, including the suspension of licenses.
Officials stated that state governments have been granted authority under the Essential Commodities Act to act against violations and have been instructed to carry out regular inspections and public briefings.
