Government Sells Over 12 Lakh 5-kg LPG Cylinders to Students and Vulnerable Communities Since March 23
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 11 (NationPress) The government announced on April 10 that over 51.5 lakh domestic LPG cylinders have been distributed, with approximately 1 lakh 5-kg Free Trade LPG cylinders sold nationwide that same day, surpassing the daily average of 77,000 recorded in February 2026.
Since March 23, 2026, the Petroleum Ministry reports that more than 12 lakh 5-kg Free Trade LPG cylinders have been allocated to students and vulnerable populations, such as migrant workers.
To improve accessibility, the government has decided to double the daily supply of 5-kg FTL cylinders to migrant workers in each state, exceeding the previously set limit of 20 percent as stated in a letter dated March 21, 2026.
The state governments will manage the distribution of these 5-kg FTL cylinders exclusively for migrant workers, with support from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
In the last eight days, public sector OMCs have conducted nearly 2,900 awareness camps regarding the 5-kg FTL cylinders, during which over 29,000 cylinders were sold, according to government sources.
The ministry advises citizens to refrain from panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG, encouraging reliance on official sources for updates. LPG consumers are urged to utilize digital booking platforms instead of visiting distribution centers and are encouraged to explore alternative fuels such as PNG and electric or induction cooktops. Everyone is urged to conserve energy during this period.
Despite the current geopolitical tensions, the government remains committed to ensuring the supply of domestic LPG and PNG, prioritizing hospitals and educational institutions.
“The government has implemented various rationalization measures on both supply and demand fronts, including boosting refinery output, extending the booking interval from 21 to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions, and prioritizing key sectors for supply,” the statement concluded.
