On March 29, Ahmedabad, the vibrant city in Gujarat, was awarded a significant infrastructure allocation of Rs 1,099 crore through the commencement and unveiling of numerous projects.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized that these initiatives aim to enhance urban living by making it more convenient and accessible, thereby bolstering the city’s international reputation.
The unveiled projects encompass a diverse range of developments, including housing, bridges, gardens, lakes, auditoriums, and other urban amenities designed to elevate civic services and expand the infrastructure framework.
During his address, Patel remarked, “The state government prioritizes the ease and convenience of its citizens,” signifying that urban development in Gujarat adheres to a consistent policy trajectory.
He highlighted that the initiative introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2005 as the “Urban Development Year” continues to inform planning, with 2025 also recognized under the same banner in the state.
Patel pointed out that Ahmedabad has gained international acclaim, including its designation as a World Heritage City, stating, “Today, Ahmedabad is advancing towards modern development while preserving its global identity.”
He reiterated that enhancing infrastructure and public welfare remains a core focus of the government’s strategy.
Over the past five years, Patel noted, more than 13,000 road projects and 6,152 stormwater and drainage initiatives have been executed in Ahmedabad, alongside improvements to the drinking water distribution network.
Efforts to transform Ahmedabad into a green city have shown “significant progress,” with over 450 projects completed at an expenditure exceeding Rs 110 crore under the direction of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In the transportation sector, he mentioned that 21 urban mobility projects worth more than Rs 2,561 crore have been rolled out, with the BRTS and Metro systems developed as modern public transit frameworks.
Regarding housing, Patel stated that under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), homes have been constructed for thousands of beneficiaries in Ahmedabad at a cost surpassing Rs 4,501 crore.
He noted that the city’s sanitation efforts have been recognized as the cleanest among cities housing over 1 million residents.
Looking forward, the Chief Minister shared that preparations are in motion to upgrade infrastructure to global standards in anticipation of events like the Commonwealth Games and the World Police and Fire Games.
Plans to extend the Sabarmati riverfront to GIFT City and redevelop the Gandhi Ashram were also emphasized as vital projects expected to promote tourism and overall development.
Additionally, the government is moving toward digitizing Anganwadi services.
“The 'Poshan Track' application will enable real-time updates of beneficiary data, enhancing monitoring and ensuring timely tracking of the health of pregnant women and children,” he explained.
Smartphones are being distributed to Anganwadi workers to facilitate this initiative.
State Women and Child Development Minister Manisha Vakil stated that over 55,000 Anganwadi workers will receive smartphones.
“Tasks such as weighing children, gathering nutrition-related data, and uploading it to the 'Poshan Tracker' application will now be more efficient,” she added, noting this will allow for continuous monitoring of children’s health and nutrition.
Furthermore, she indicated that tracking take-home rations and support for pregnant and lactating women would improve, with Rs 360 crore allocated to enhance Anganwadi infrastructure.
State Urban Development Minister Darshana Vaghela affirmed, “Delivering quality roads, robust infrastructure, and clean drinking water to the citizens of Ahmedabad remains the state government’s utmost priority,” emphasizing that there is no shortage of funds for development projects and that ongoing investment has enabled the expansion of civic infrastructure and housing.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Satadhar Junction flyover in the Ghatlodia area.
Constructed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation at an estimated cost of Rs 90 crore, the flyover spans 936 meters in length and 16.60 meters in width.
