Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran addressed Air India employees on Friday, emphasizing that the airline is currently navigating a difficult phase and encouraging a strong emphasis on execution and cost management.
“Our future looks promising, and we have established a robust foundation for our aspirations, yet we are experiencing a challenging period,” Chandrasekaran stated, underscoring the importance of staying committed to execution.
“We should concentrate on what we can control, seek improvements, maintain accuracy on costs, and stay realistic about our circumstances,” he remarked.
Chandrasekaran highlighted that safety remains paramount and non-negotiable for Air India, integral to decisions involving operations, engineering, training, and customer service.
“Collaborate effectively, prioritize the customer. Our journey has only just begun, and there’s much ahead. Persist, and we will achieve our goals,” he encouraged.
These remarks come as the airline undergoes leadership and operational shifts, with CEO Campbell Wilson announcing his plan to step down in 2026. The Tata-owned airline noted that Wilson will continue in his position until a successor is appointed.
Since the tragic June 2025 crash of a Boeing 787 near Ahmedabad, which resulted in 260 fatalities, Air India has faced stringent regulatory scrutiny.
Following this, the airline received criticism for safety violations, including operating an aircraft multiple times without a valid airworthiness certificate and failing to conduct necessary emergency equipment inspections.
In light of the US-Iran conflict, Air India canceled approximately 2,500 flights to West Asia over three weeks, operating only 30% of its regular Middle East schedule.
The Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA) called in March for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the decision-making frameworks within Air India, especially regarding the roles of the Vice President - Operations and the Crew Scheduling Department.
