Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Steps Down During Challenging Times for Airline
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) – Reports emerged on Tuesday indicating that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air India, Campbell Wilson, has stepped down prior to the completion of his term. As of now, the airline has not released an official statement regarding this situation.
According to sources, Wilson is currently in his notice period.
The Tata Group-owned airline has refrained from making any public comments, and inquiries directed to the airline went unanswered.
It remains uncertain whether a successor has been identified, as the board has been searching for a new CEO since last year.
The Tata Group initiated this search for a new CEO as Air India navigates a challenging period following the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. The airline has struggled to achieve the necessary financial recovery after its privatization.
Reports suggest that Wilson's resignation was sanctioned during a board meeting last week; however, he will continue to serve until a replacement is appointed.
Wilson was appointed as CEO and Managing Director of Air India in 2022 under a five-year contract following the government's sale of the airline to the Tata Group.
His term was originally set to conclude in July 2027.
Before joining Air India, Wilson held the position of CEO at Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
Meanwhile, Air India has been under heavy regulatory oversight since a fatal plane crash in Ahmedabad last June that resulted in the loss of 260 lives. Additionally, high fuel expenses and delays in new aircraft deliveries have impacted operations.
This leadership transition at Air India occurs shortly after IndiGo, a major competitor, announced the appointment of William Walsh as its new CEO following the resignation of Pieter Elbers. Walsh is set to take over on August 3.
Last month, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, appointed Walsh as CEO, pending regulatory approvals, after Elbers resigned from his position earlier in March.
Walsh, who will conclude his tenure at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 31, 2026, is expected to officially start with IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026, as stated by the airline.
