New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, announced on Monday that talks with the regional party Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, are still in progress, with no conclusive agreement reached so far regarding any potential alliance or seat-sharing.

After participating in a meeting of the Congress Screening Committee in the national capital, Saikia urged political leaders and stakeholders to avoid disseminating false information regarding the discussions.

"Negotiations with Raijor Dal are ongoing and no decisions have been finalized at this point. I request everyone to refrain from engaging in misinformation," he stated.

The senior Congress figure emphasized that the party is currently conducting discussions at multiple organizational and leadership levels, thoroughly evaluating all significant factors, including the current political landscape, before making a definitive choice.

He stated that the Congress leadership would make a timely decision, considering the overarching goal of enhancing opposition unity and electoral prospects in Assam.

Saikia also mentioned that the Screening Committee meeting concentrated on organizational readiness and internal strategies concerning the party’s plan for upcoming electoral challenges in the state.

He noted that discussions were being held in a collaborative and constructive manner to ensure clarity, organizational unity, and preparedness as elections approach.

Earlier in the day, Akhil Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal and an MLA, warned that leaving his party out of any opposition coalition could be detrimental and might weaken the collective effort against the BJP in Assam.

He asserted that Raijor Dal has a strong grassroots presence in numerous constituencies and plays a crucial role in mobilizing voters, especially among youth and marginalized groups.

“If Raijor Dal is excluded, the alliance will encounter significant challenges. Overlooking our contributions will only benefit the BJP,” Gogoi cautioned.

He further indicated that while he is open to ongoing discussions with the Congress, it is essential for the party to clarify its stance promptly to prevent confusion amongst its workers and supporters.

Gogoi also pointed out that extended uncertainty surrounding alliance arrangements could dishearten opposition members and hinder election preparations.
