Almost Nallavan: Raju Jeyamohan's dark comedy explores dual identity
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor-director Raju Jeyamohan, best known as the winner of Bigg Boss Tamil Season 5, has launched his directorial venture 'Almost Nallavan' — a dark comedy in which he also plays the lead role. The film, which began production recently with a traditional pooja ceremony in Chennai, is being presented by Passion Studios in association with Aspire Ubuntu Films.
The Central Idea
Jeyamohan, who has both written and directed the film, says the title carries deliberate weight. 'The title Almost Nallavan perfectly reflects the central idea of the film — that every individual possesses both good and flawed sides,' he said. The narrative reportedly centres on the tension between a person's real identity and the curated persona they construct online, a theme Jeyamohan describes as especially resonant in today's digital age.
According to the director, the story follows one such individual through an unexpected journey that forces a reckoning between these two selves. The word 'Almost' in the title, sources close to the project note, is critical to understanding its tone — signalling imperfection rather than heroism.
Cast and Key Collaborators
Veteran actor Sathyaraj appears in a pivotal role alongside Jeyamohan. The supporting cast includes Dushara Vijayan, Imman Annachi, Bigg Boss fame Thamarai Selvi, theatre artist Yazhini, and Pritham Chakravarthy.
The film's launch ceremony was attended by a notable gathering from Tamil cinema, including directors Bramma and Adhik Ravichandran, Think Music Santhosh, actor-director RJ Balaji, producer Lalith Kumar, Abhishek Geetham, Rangaraj Pandey, Vidhu, and director Rohin Venkatesan.
What the Producers Said
Producer Sudhan Sundaram of Passion Studios said the project stood out for its organic humour and cultural rootedness. 'When Raju narrated the script, I could immediately visualise the laughter and enjoyment it would bring to audiences in theatres. Its humour feels organic, the storytelling is refreshing, and the entertainment is abundant throughout,' he said.
Producer H. Vinoth of Aspire Ubuntu Films expressed confidence in the film's appeal, noting that Tamil cinema audiences have consistently rewarded fresh and meaningful content. 'I am confident that Almost Nallavan will be a distinctive entertainer that audiences will thoroughly enjoy,' he added.
Technical Team
Cinematography is being handled by T.S. Prasanna, who previously served as associate to cinematographer Vijay Karthik Kannan on films including 'Jailer', 'Jailer 2', and 'Doctor'. Editing is entrusted to Govind, known for his work on critically acclaimed films '96' and 'Meiyazhagan'.
Music is composed by Foxn, whose recent output has produced multiple chartbusters. Bala Jayapradha makes her debut as art director on this project, action sequences are choreographed by Om, costume design is handled by Jefferson and Raji Thenappan, and Knack Studios is leading the VFX work.
What to Expect
'Almost Nallavan' is being positioned as a rural dark comedy with broad audience appeal, blending rooted emotions with sharp humour. With a technically accomplished crew and a cast that mixes established names with fresh talent, the film marks a significant step for Jeyamohan as a filmmaker. A release date has not yet been announced.
