Did Cong Open Borders for Bangladeshis? HM Amit Shah Speaks on Illegal Immigrants
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 20 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday criticized the Congress party, claiming they "facilitated the open borders" that led to a surge of Bangladeshi nationals entering India during their governance.
Speaking to supporters in the Nathanpur area of Assam’s Cachar district, Shah emphasized that every illegal Bangladeshi who crossed into India during the Congress administration will be identified and expelled.
“The Congress government permitted unchecked infiltration by keeping the borders open for Bangladeshis. I assure the citizens of Assam that those who entered the country unlawfully under Congress will be deported,” Shah declared, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.
He condemned the opposition for compromising national security for political gain and neglecting the issues faced by border states such as Assam.
The Home Minister affirmed that the BJP-led central government is dedicated to protecting India’s borders and preserving the cultural and demographic integrity of northeastern states.
He noted that stringent measures are already in effect to enhance border management and reduce illegal immigration.
During his visit, Shah also launched the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP-2) in Nathanpur, positioned along the India-Bangladesh border.
This initiative is designed to foster the development of border communities by improving infrastructure, connectivity, job prospects, and access to essential services, thereby elevating the living standards of residents and countering migration from these strategically vital regions.
Shah remarked that the Vibrant Villages Programme embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of turning India’s border villages into flourishing hubs of development.
“In the past, border villages were overlooked, prompting people to migrate. Through the VVP, we are ensuring that the amenities available in other areas of the country reach these villages too,” he stated.
The Home Minister acknowledged that the initial phase of the programme had successfully enhanced road access, healthcare, education, and job opportunities in border regions.
VVP-2, he mentioned, will broaden these advantages to even more villages, further bolstering border security.
Reiterating the Centre’s commitment, Shah assured that Assam and the entire Northeast will continue to receive focused attention from the BJP government in terms of progress and national security.
