Jaipur, Oct 9 (NationPress) The Chief Electoral Officer (ECO) Naveen Mahajan has revealed that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced stringent guidelines for political parties regarding the ethical application of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and deepfake videos in the electoral arena.
The primary objective is to maintain transparency, fairness, and integrity in campaigning for the imminent Anta Assembly by-election, along with seven other constituencies.
With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) taking effect from October 6, 2025, following the announcement of the Bihar Legislative Assembly General Elections and several assembly by-elections, including Anta, the Commission has stressed that all campaign material must adhere to the MCC and relevant legal frameworks.
Mahajan mentioned that the Commission has observed a worrying trend in the misuse of AI technologies to fabricate misleading or false information targeting opposing parties and candidates.
He emphasized, “Criticism directed at political parties and candidates should focus on their policies, programs, records, and public actions. Personal attacks, unverified statements, or content that violates privacy or dignity will not be accepted.”
He further noted that any promotional content containing AI-generated or digitally modified elements must be distinctly marked as “artificial intelligence-based” or “digitally enhanced.”
This requirement extends to all types of campaign materials, including those shared online and through social media.
The Election Commission has ramped up its surveillance of social media platforms to combat the dissemination of misinformation, hate speech, and manipulated media.
Mahajan cautioned, “Severe consequences will ensue for any individual or political entity found breaching the Model Code of Conduct or propagating misleading or harmful content via digital channels.”
The Commission’s guidelines form part of a comprehensive effort to safeguard the integrity of democratic processes amid swiftly evolving technology.
