Is Araijeet Hundal Ready to Shine in the FIH Men’s Pro League?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rourkela, Feb 9 (NationPress) Following a remarkable recovery from injury, Araijeet Singh Hundal, one of India's most talented young forwards, is geared up to participate in the upcoming matches of the FIH Men’s Pro League 2025–26 from February 10 to 15 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. India will kick off their campaign against Belgium on February 11.
Araijeet returned to action in the Hockey India League (HIL) after an injury sustained during training prevented him from competing in the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup in Tamil Nadu, where India secured the bronze medal. Reflecting on his journey to recovery, the young athlete stated, “Missing the Junior World Cup due to my injury was particularly challenging for me mentally. Although surgery was recommended by doctors, I opted to focus on my rehabilitation. I was determined to come back stronger, and my quick recovery allowed me to participate in the Hero HIL season.”
In the HIL, Araijeet had an impressive tournament with Ranchi Royals, netting three goals, one of which was scored in the final as his team finished as runners-up. He credited the league with helping him regain his confidence and momentum after a significant break from the game.
“This season in the HIL was a significant improvement for me compared to last year. Initially, I needed a couple of matches to find my rhythm and boost my confidence, but after that, I hit my stride. Reaching the finals with Ranchi Royals was a remarkable experience and I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. Playing alongside senior and international players allowed me to learn a lot. Observing their preparation and decision-making in high-pressure situations greatly enhanced my game,” he mentioned.
Araijeet also emphasized the valuable lessons learned from playing alongside veteran forward Mandeep Singh in the Ranchi Royals, who will again be a part of India’s attack in the upcoming FIH Pro League.
“Playing with Mandeep bhai is always beneficial. He has been a top performer for many years, and we can always seek his advice when we make tactical or technical errors. His explanations are clear, and his calm demeanor makes it easy for juniors like me to learn,” he explained.
The Rourkela leg will see India face formidable opponents like Argentina and Belgium. With preparations underway for the home leg of the FIH Men’s Pro League, Araijeet shared his confidence in his training with Head Coach Craig Fulton, stating, “Our training sessions have been exceptionally productive, with great intensity. This is an incredible opportunity for me to showcase my skills at the senior level. Craig Fulton has provided me with clear guidance as a forward, especially on enhancing my awareness and decision-making in the circle. I make it a point to review these aspects before each match.”
Looking forward, Araijeet identified two primary focus areas for the upcoming matches: “I aim to minimize careless mistakes when I have the ball in the circle and to create scoring opportunities or win penalty corners for the team. Additionally, I need to maintain my discipline off the ball—staying alert, holding my position, and executing my role within the team framework.”
