Bhopal, Aug 20 (NationPress) Congress MLA Arif Masood has been charged with fraud and forgery in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, as of Wednesday.
Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanchari Mishra confirmed to IANS that the FIR was filed following a directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
"The Bhopal police have initiated an FIR against Arif Masood. This action follows the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order. Masood has been implicated, and an investigation is currently in progress," Mishra stated.
Importantly, a division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court mandated the Bhopal Police Commissioner to file an FIR against Masood due to allegations involving the use of forged solvency papers related to the recognition of Indira Priyadarshini College, which is operated by a society where the Congress MLA serves as secretary.
The court also directed that an FIR be filed against officials from the Higher Education Department, who were described as "complicit" for two decades, permitting the college to remain operational.
The bench, including Justice Atul Sreedharan and Justice Pradeep Mittal, ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ADGP (telecom) Sanjiv Shami to supervise the investigation, which is expected to conclude within three months.
Masood had previously approached the High Court to contest the deregistration of his college by Barkatullah University in Bhopal, but instead found himself facing an FIR.
The court has temporarily halted the deregistration in the interest of over 1,000 students enrolled at the college, but made it clear that no new admissions will be allowed for the upcoming academic year.
The matter was initially brought to light by his political rival, BJP leader Dhruvnarayan Singh, son of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Govind Narayan Singh.
In the 2023 elections, the BJP nominated Dhruvnarayan Singh to contest against Masood for the Bhopal Centre Assembly seat, which Masood ultimately retained.
