What Did Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi Discover During His Visit to Manipur?

Imphal, July 30 (NationPress) General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Indian Army, conducted a significant visit to Manipur on Wednesday to assess the ongoing security landscape and the operational readiness of the Assam Rifles and other military units stationed within the state.

This visit is crucial as Manipur has been experiencing ethnic unrest since May 2023, despite various measures initiated by both the Central and State governments.

During his time in Manipur, the Army chief received comprehensive briefings regarding the ground realities and the ongoing efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security, as shared by Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat. He emphasized that the visit highlighted the Army’s unwavering commitment to fostering stability and development in the area.

“He evaluated the operational readiness of the troops and commended their exceptional professionalism, resilience, and dedication in challenging circumstances,” the spokesperson noted.

General Dwivedi also met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to discuss security and development issues.

This meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between the civil administration and the armed forces in promoting peace and progress in the region.

Later, the Army chief is set to attend a match of the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at Khuman Lampak Stadium, marking the tournament’s return to Imphal after a two-year hiatus. The pre-match ceremony will feature a vibrant cultural program and military displays, celebrating Manipur’s rich heritage and the pride of the Armed Forces.

Additionally, he will interact with players and officials from the local teams NEROCA FC and TRAU FC before the Group F match.

The evening’s events will also showcase aerial and ground displays by Army Aviation, Special Forces skydivers, pipe and symphony bands, and traditional performances, reflecting a celebration of youth, sports, and unity.

General Dwivedi’s visit reaffirmed the Indian Army’s enduring role in promoting peace, engaging the youth through sports, and supporting military-civil collaboration for comprehensive development in Manipur.

Earlier this month, the Army's Eastern Command chief, Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari, alongside Spear Corps commander Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar and Inspector General of Assam Rifles, South, Major Gen Ravroop Singh, convened at Raj Bhavan with the Governor, providing updates on the security scenario in the state and the broader northeastern region.

Governor Bhalla had previously remarked that “peace and normalcy” are gradually returning to the state, commending the efforts of the government, armed forces, and civil society groups. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13 this year, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

As the security situation in Manipur remains turbulent, the extension of President's Rule for another six months starting from August 13 has been announced, as joint security forces intensify operations against insurgent groups across the state.
