Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), remarked during the annual press conference of the Indian Army on Tuesday that the situation in the Northeast, particularly in Manipur, has improved significantly due to the neutral, transparent, and decisive actions taken by security forces.
In light of the unrest in neighboring Myanmar, the security forces are diligently working to protect the northeastern region from any negative spillover effects.
While speaking to the media, the Army chief stated, "Regarding the Northeast, the neutral, transparent, and decisive actions by security forces, in conjunction with various proactive government initiatives, have resulted in a noticeable improvement in the conditions in Manipur during 2025.
The peaceful execution of the Durand Cup, the revival of cultural festivals, and the extension of the suspension of operations (SoO) with Kuki insurgent groups in September 2025 have been significant indicators of stability," he noted.
General Dwivedi also highlighted that the Indian Army, along with the Assam Rifles and the Ministry of Home Affairs, has been actively working to secure the northeastern front against the challenging circumstances presently prevailing in Myanmar.
"In response to the unrest in Myanmar, a comprehensive multi-agency security framework involving the Assam Rifles, Army, and Home Ministry is focused on insulating the Northeast from spillover impacts. Following the successful execution of phase two elections in Myanmar, we expect enhanced engagement moving forward," he stated.
Moreover, he pointed out that the situation along the northern and northwestern borders remains stable and under firm control, although he emphasized the need for constant vigilance.
He added that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has experienced a significant positive transformation in 2025, noting that the shift from terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape in the union territory. He further mentioned that over the past year, security forces have neutralized 31 terrorists, with 65 percent being of Pakistani origin, including those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack.
