Imphal, April 13 (NationPress) Manipur’s Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, affirmed on Monday that the government's primary focus is the protection, safety, and harmonious coexistence of all communities in the region.
An official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) highlighted that Manipur is a melting pot of 36 communities, including both tribal and non-tribal groups, settled throughout the Imphal Valley and the surrounding hill districts.
On the same day, Lt General Vikas Lakhera, the Director General of Assam Rifles, met with the Chief Minister to discuss the current law and order situation as well as the overall security landscape in the state.
Following their conversation, Singh shared on Facebook: “It is heartening to see that through the joint efforts of the government and security agencies, the overall situation has considerably improved.”
“Our top priority continues to be the protection, safety, and peaceful coexistence of all communities, and this principle governs all our actions. We have already initiated necessary measures to uphold stability and enhance the security framework,” he stated.
The Chief Minister also reiterated the government’s unwavering dedication to promoting peace, fostering harmony, and ensuring the well-being of every citizen. Sources from Assam Rifles mentioned that Lt Gen Lakhera visited the Keithelmanbi Garrison on Sunday, where he assessed operational readiness and troop welfare in Manipur.
During his visit, the Director General commended the Assam Rifles, known as the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” for their professionalism and honored seven personnel for their valor while engaging with Assam Rifles sports teams.
This visit was accompanied by a sense of high morale and a firm commitment to maintaining regional peace, the sources noted.
In the meantime, numerous protests continued across Imphal on Monday, with many participants, particularly women, condemning the bomb attack on April 7 in Bishnupur district that tragically resulted in the deaths of two young children.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) organized a sit-in protest at Irawat Bhavan in Imphal, denouncing both the April 7 incident and the current law and order challenges facing the state. The party is demanding justice for the victims of the Tronglaobi attack and is calling for a special session of the state Assembly to pass a resolution regarding the detection of illegal migrants.
Additionally, the party criticized the state government for what they perceive as a failure to maintain law and order.
Demonstrations related to the incident were reported in various regions of the state. The protests originated from the bomb attack in Tronglaobi village, which resulted in the deaths of two children while they slept and left their mother injured.
Subsequent protests related to this incident reportedly resulted in gunfire, leading to the deaths of three individuals and injuring five others.
On Sunday evening, the Oinam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup held a candlelight vigil at Oinam Keithel, where community members gathered to mourn the victims and voice their anger.
Approximately 600 participants, including Meira Paibi group members and local residents, took part in the event. The Meira Paibi, meaning “torch bearers” in Manipuri, is one of the most influential women's organizations in the northeastern state.
