Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, Feb 23 (NationPress) In a significant development, the Andhra Pradesh Police apprehended IPS officer Sunil Nayak in Bihar on Monday. This arrest is linked to the alleged custodial torture of K Raghurama Krishna Raju, the current Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, which reportedly occurred in 2021 during the tenure of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
Nayak, who previously held the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Andhra Pradesh, was taken into custody by a police team dispatched from Andhra Pradesh. The police from Guntur district confirmed the arrest.
He is currently being transported under a transit warrant to Guntur, where he faces charges alongside others.
As an IPS officer from the Bihar cadre, Nayak was on deputation in Andhra Pradesh. Following the government transition in 2024, he returned to Bihar and is now serving as Inspector General of the Fire Services Department.
In 2021, Raghurama Krishna Raju, then an MP, was detained for allegedly making derogatory comments about the then Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He claims he suffered torture while in police custody.
After the electoral victory of the TDP-led coalition in 2024, a legal case was initiated against Jagan Mohan Reddy and others based on Raju's complaint.
In July 2024, an FIR was lodged against Jagan Mohan Reddy, three IPS officers, and others on Raju's claims of an attempt on his life while in custody.
The FIR includes accusations against the former CID chief P.V. Sunil Kumar, former Intelligence Chief Seetharamanjaneyulu, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Sunil Nayak, and others.
Last year, Sunil Nayak was summoned for questioning regarding the case, but he did not comply.
Raju, elected to the Lok Sabha on a YSR Congress Party ticket from Narsapuram in 2019, later distanced himself from the party.
He was arrested on May 14, 2021, at his Hyderabad residence for criticizing the government and allegedly inciting communal discord within the state.
Despite recovering from cardiac surgery, Raju alleged that he was not medically assessed or presented in court in Hyderabad. He claimed he was forcibly taken to Guntur while being physically restrained by police.
Raju reported being held at the CB CID office, where he alleged an attempt on his life occurred during police detention. He accused Sunil Kumar and others of physically assaulting him with a rubber belt and a lathi, denying him access to medication.
According to Raju, despite being aware of his recent bypass surgery, individuals pressed down on his chest, which he interprets as a deliberate attempt to harm him.
