Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 9 (NationPress) The High Court of Andhra Pradesh has mandated that Bihar's Inspector General of Police, Sunil Kumar Naik, present himself before the Andhra Pradesh Police until March 12 as part of the investigation into the alleged custodial torture of former Member of Parliament K. Raghurama Krishna Raju.
During the proceedings concerning his anticipatory bail request, the court instructed Naik, an officer from the Bihar cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS), to continue his appearances for questioning for an additional three days.
On Monday, Naik faced interrogation for the fifth consecutive day. When the court reconvened regarding his bail application, the investigating officer requested more time to conduct their questioning.
In response, the court granted the officer's request and ordered Naik to be available for questioning until March 12. The hearing for the bail petition is also scheduled for that date.
Previously, the court had instructed Naik to appear for questioning daily from March 5 to March 9.
A police team, led by A. R. Damodar, the Superintendent of Police from Vizianagaram and the case's investigating officer, has been interrogating him daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Reports indicate that the interrogation focused on statements made by Raju, who claims to have suffered torture while in custody under the administration of the YSR Congress Party.
Based on Raju's allegations, the Guntur police filed charges last year against former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and three IPS officers, including Sunil Naik.
Raju, who was a dissenting MP of the YSRCP, was apprehended in 2021 for allegedly making derogatory comments about Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Naik was serving as a Deputy Inspector General in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on deputation in Andhra Pradesh.
Currently, he holds the position of Director of the Bihar State Fire Services, while Raju serves as the Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
The Andhra Pradesh Police apprehended Naik in Patna on February 23 after he failed to comply with questioning notices. However, a Patna court denied the police's request for his transit warrant.
Subsequently, the police sought a court order in Guntur, which issued an arrest warrant on February 26.
Naik had also filed for anticipatory bail in the High Court, which granted him interim protection but required him to appear before the investigating officer.
